What is Home Care?

I often get asked, “What is Home Care” and I try to explain in general terms about the services offered as a part of Home Care. So I thought why not write about it and increase awareness. So here it is…..

shutterstock_13861027bHome care is generally defined as non-medical support services delivered at the home of a senior. The aim of home care is to allow seniors to remain at home longer rather than enter an assisted living community, nursing home or other type of senior care. Generally, home care is considered appropriate if a senior prefers to stay at home but needs assistance with activities of daily living (ADL) which include bathing, dressing, and meal preparation. Home Care may also extend to simply needing assistance with transportation, paying bills, making appointments, or simply being there to provide companionship and emotional support.

There are various ways seniors can receive home care.

  – First and most common method is to get care from a family member. Such care can be provided on a regular or temporary (as needed) basis depending on the availability of family member. Although this is the most cost effective solution, it may prove counter productive if family member has a job and does not live with the senior.

– Second method, which is cheaper than the one below but could be dangerous, is that the family can hire a caregiver to provide care. I say dangerous because the caregivers family hire on their own may or may not be certified, trained and/or background checked, insured or bonded. Family must obtain a liability insurance if caregiver doesn’t have one. There are many other issues family may have to deal with if they choose to go this route. Most of these issues will be covered in my next blog, “pitfalls of hiring a independent caregiver”.

– The third option, which is the most convenient and organized option, is to use a Home Care agency such as Inspired Care Home Health.

Well, whichever option you choose from the above three, home care services can be performed from a few hours a day to 24 hours a day. Care can be paid for directly by the client or through a variety of public and private funding sources such as Long Term Care Insurance, Workers Compensation, and Medicaid. This will be something that needs more attention and we will cover in “How to pay for Home Care?”
